Learn to use traditional batik (beeswax resist dyeing) tools like Indonesian tjanting tools, metal Malaysian stamps, and hand carved Indian woodblocks to print, drip, draw, and paint with natural beeswax on cotton cloth.  Discover the beauty of a single layer batik dyed in the low-water immersion (LWI) style with fiber reactive dyes.  Each participant will make 1 yard of fabric.  During the workshop, you will wax and dye your fabric.  Each student will learn to apply the wax with a variety of tools, then learn to create a LWI dye bath for a single-color dye bath that has varying shades in it.  Instructions for dye washout and wax removal will be given for students to do at home.  Or, for $20.00 per yard, Waxon Studios will handle the removal for you.  This is an exciting and hands on workshop that will have you wanting to make lots more batik fabric!!

Have you ever wondered about where all those quilts we make for Project Linus go?  Who gets them?  Who decides who gets them?  How do they get there? How many do we make locally?  Nationally?  Well, Ellen is the one who can answer all those questions and more for us.  She works tirelessly for Project Linus.  Ellen runs our monthly workdays at Nativity Lutheran in Arden and is the Coordinator for our Western North Carolina Chapter.  She is a hardworking, delightful and always cheerful person and I am sure you will enjoy her program!

Marcia Layton is a pattern designer and quilt teacher from Tampa, Florida. Marcia began her adult life as a preschool teacher. She began making hand print quilts for school fund raisers and they sold well.  This was the first step of her very successful quilting and pattern-making career.  Marcia is a wonderful designer and teacher.  I know you will enjoy hearing about her journey!

Marcia Layton  is a pattern designer and teacher from Tampa, Florida.  She uses yo-yos, rickrack and other items in delightful ways to embellish her quilts and wall hangings.  Her patterns often include distinctive and creative boarders using various embellishments.  In this workshop, we have the choice to make either a Christmas wall hanging called Simply Sparkly or a sunflower wall hanging called Simply Sunflower.  Patterns will be available at the workshop for $10.00.  Kits will also be available by preorder.  The kits include the pattern and fabric for the top and binding, buttons, ribbon and rickrack trims for $45.00.  Kit does not include optional crystals for Simply Sparkly.  Preorder kits through Jean Zabel by May 25.

Our July Program is by Cindy Page and Patti Cline of the Quilter's Gallery. They are also known as "The Pizza Girls," a nickname they picked up because of the way they package some of their fabrics.  They will show us roughly 50 quilts and tops, some from current patterns and some that are original designs.  As they display the quilts, they will discuss color usage, fabric choices and border treatments. We will also hear some tips and tricks they have picked up over the past 25+ years!  Patti and Cindy are both a lot of fun and I am sure their program will be very entertaining!

Cindy Page and Patti Cline of The Quilter's Gallery, also known as the Pizza Girls, will show us how to "Embrace Our Curves!"  Everyone loves the look of curved seams in quilts, but it is often a technique that challenges us.  This class will cover the curves found in Rainbow Curves, Wheel of Mystery and Winner's Bouquet blocks.  A kit with a block of each type is available at the workshop for $9.00.

Sharron Armel has created a technique class titled " New Tricks."  She describes it as an easy way to make Card Trick blocks.  She says it is easy because:

    • Some of the fabric can be precut to 2 1/2" strips
    • No marking is required
    • Very few bias seams
    • There is a little room for error

I'm always open for a new, improved way to make a block and this method sounds like a big improvement!

Cheryl Brickey's day job is pretty impressive!  She is an engineer and patent agent for a private textile and chemical company!  Somehow, she found the time and energy to take those skills and combine them with her "craftiness" to create her own quilt pattern company, Meadow Mist Designs.  Cheryl's story reminds us that sometimes it's those little things we do that set us off on an entirely new and rewarding path.  I believe you will enjoy the story of her journey!

We welcome Candy Grisham back from Missouri!  Her program for us this month is about our "Tools of the Trade" for quilting and sewing. Have you ever needed something on a Sunday and your quilt store wasn't open?  Did you know that some of the tools we use are available at Big Box stores near you that are open 7 days a week?  Candy will tell us about what she has found out there and where it is.  This information could certainly come in handy and could even save us some money!
